Greenville New House
A house for a newly married couple in an established historic neighborhood of Greenville, SC. Our initial charge was to help them create a mutual design vocabulary and a home that looked as it had always been part of the property.
A house had previously occupied the property, but was in disrepair and since demolished. As the couple’s combined families contained multiple grown children and grandchildren, they wanted their home to be a place where they could easily entertain. They were in agreement, though, that the first priority was that the new home be enjoyable and comfortable for the two of them.
The first-floor plan integrates social and private spaces seamlessly with wonderful axial views, circulation and natural light. The front entrance leads into the central room, establishing an axis that bisects the house through the veranda and rear garden beyond. On the second floor are additional bedrooms and baths that are accessed through a playful, curvilinear stair. To preserve the building scale and house six automobiles, two separate garages are designed.
At the rear, a covered porch is divided into three sections to allow for multiple, dedicated uses for private and communal gatherings. To coincide with the front exterior, custom clad casement windows are again used, and the schist stone peaks through the upper level. Meanwhile, the selection of painted white brick and doric columns accentuate the less formal approach to the pool and entertainment spaces.
